Sleeping by the Inland Sea
(Video installation ~23 min) Kasaya-tei, Hiketa, Higashikagawa City
Sleeping by the Inland Sea is a video installation expressing a sense of tranquility and solace in relation to the ocean, in this case the Seto Inland Sea. It also reflects the strong affinity that the people of Kagawa and Hiketa have harboured towards this water passage, since long ago. Being sheltered from the greater Pacific Ocean, the Seto Inland Sea is relatively calm, providing a safe passage for ships and a refuge to many islands and their inhabitants.
The idea of "an inland sea" can also refer, not only to a physical ocean, but metaphorically to the spiritual and mental inner sea residing within the human psyche.
By bringing the local Hiketa river and ocean into the inner tatami floor space of one of the town’s historical buildings, I sought to convey a sense of intimacy and solace in relation to these waterways, as well as reverence to their vastness and force.
The bright clothes I wear appear surreal and are also reminiscent of the dolls displayed during the annual doll festival.
